Antarctic Whales

Whales are not fish they are mammals that live in oceans all over the world. Did you know that they are the largest animals living in Antarctica?

Whales are in groups called a pod. A male whale is called a bull,  a female whale is called a cow, and a baby whale is called a calf.

Whales have very long jaw bones in there mouth. They have a thick layer of blubber under their skin, to keep them warm in freezing water.

Toothed whales have peg teeth so they are called toothed whales. Some whales have no teeth at all so they are called baleen whales.

Seals

Seals have thick, short hair on their stream lined body to keep them warm.Seals have flippers to help them be superb swimmers. Most of the time, seals are in the sea.


Seals are mammals that live in oceans all over the world.All of the seals at antarctica are non-eared seals.These seals have lots of blubber to keep them warm.

Seals are animals that haul themselves on the ice. In the sea the seals swim really fast. After hauling themselves on the ice they give birth to little pups.

I learnt today that at the antarctic sea the lower you go the warmer it gets.
On the bottom of the antarctic sea there is coral like samoa.

Core samples

This afternoon i have been learning how to take core samples. We took samples from a cupcake and guessed what the core (inside) looked like. In a real life geologists take samples of what is under the land.
